Bringing Drumming Joy to Communities Across Nottingham

At LW Arts CIC, we believe rhythm belongs to everyone. Over recent months, we’ve been bringing drumming into communities across Nottingham, Mansfield, Derbyshire, and Chesterfield, creating spaces where people of all ages and all abilities can come together, connect and experience joy through music.

Our work has taken us into urban green spaces, care homes, community settings and outdoor environments, each with its own energy, but all connected through rhythm.

In early years sessions, particularly in Nottingham’s parks and green spaces, drumming becomes a playful and sensory experience. Young children explore sound, movement and imagination through simple rhythms, songs and games. There’s something powerful about being outdoors, the openness, the fresh air, the freedom to move, all supporting children to express themselves and build confidence in a natural way.

With older generations in care home settings, drumming opens up a different kind of connection. Familiar songs begin to emerge, voices join together, and memories are sparked through rhythm and melody. Even those who may feel withdrawn or unsure often find a way in, a tap of the hand, a quiet hum, a shared smile. These sessions are gentle, responsive and full of warmth, creating moments of joy and togetherness.

Across family sessions, we’ve brought drumming into woodland and forest spaces, combining rhythm with storytelling. Here, music becomes part of a wider creative journey, telling stories through sound, using the environment as inspiration, and inviting families to create together. Parents, carers and children sit side by side, building rhythms, sharing ideas and enjoying time that feels both relaxed and meaningful.

What sits at the heart of all of this is inclusion. No experience is needed, and there is no “right” way to take part. Whether someone is joining in fully, listening, moving, singing or simply being present, every contribution is valued.

We consistently see the impact:

  • increased confidence and self-expression

  • stronger connections between people and across generations

  • improved wellbeing through creative activity

  • a sense of belonging within supportive, welcoming spaces

Drumming has a unique way of bringing people together. It cuts through barriers, creates shared moments and allows people to communicate beyond words.

From city parks to care homes, from forests to community centres, it’s been a privilege to witness these moments of connection and joy across Nottingham.

And this is just the beginning!
