Rhythm, Connection and Joy – Drumming with Our Vision, Our Future in Chesterfield
As part of our Reaching for the Stars project, LW Arts CIC has been delivering a series of drumming and rhthm workshops at Our Vision, Our Future in Chesterfield, Nottingham, Mansfield and Derbyshire. This project has been bringing people together through rhythm, creativity and connection.
From the very first session, it was clear these spaces were about more than music. They became welcoming, inclusive environments where adults and families with different abilities could come together, feel at ease, and take part in something shared.
Using drums, percussion and the body, participants explored rhythm in a way that was accessible to everyone. No experience was needed, just a willingness to join in. As confidence grew, sessions naturally expanded to include singing, movement and even karaoke, with people choosing songs, leading moments and encouraging one another along the way.
What made these sessions special was the way they were shaped by the people in the room. Through our tailored approach, participants helped guide the direction of each session. This meant the workshops felt responsive, inclusive and genuinely co-created, allowing everyone to engage in ways that suited them.
There were moments of laughter, moments of focus, and moments where the whole group found a shared rhythm together – a powerful reminder of how creative activity can build connection without the need for words.
Across the programme, we saw clear impact. People grew in confidence, formed new relationships, and experienced the wellbeing benefits of music, movement and self-expression. Participants who were initially hesitant began to take part more fully, with some even stepping forward to lead rhythms or share a favourite song.
These sessions highlight the importance of creating spaces where people feel safe, valued and able to express themselves. Through rhythm and creativity, we have enjoyed supporting individuals to connect – with themselves and with others – in meaningful and lasting ways.
