Under the Bantaba

Under the Bantaba is a new LW Arts CIC project bringing women together through West African music, shared learning, creativity and connection.

The project takes its name from the bantaba, a traditional gathering place in The Gambia where people come together to talk, listen, learn, share stories and spend time together. That idea of gathering and exchange is central to the project.

At the heart of Under the Bantaba is learning directly from experienced artists with deep knowledge of the music and traditions being shared. Gambian musician Ansumana Susso leads teaching in kora and balafon, sharing technique, repertoire and cultural context. The project also includes further artistic development and collaboration with musicians including Josh Doughty.

Musicians and Dance Artists will develop their practice through this learning and work alongside community groups, women, schools and artists across Nottinghamshire.

Under the Bantaba will include:

  • musical development in kora, balafon, song and rhythm

  • work with HLDC and women-led community groups

  • school workshops and performances

  • opportunities for women to build confidence and creative leadership

  • public sharing and performances at community events and festivals

  • the development of new repertoire and resources that can continue beyond the project

The project is not just about learning music. It is also about building relationships, creating welcoming spaces, supporting one another and recognising the people, histories and communities connected to the traditions being shared.

We want the project to grow through collaboration and exchange, with Gambian and West African artists playing a visible and meaningful role in shaping the work.

Under the Bantaba is supported using public funding by Arts Council England, made possible by National Lottery players.

We’ll be sharing more from the project as it develops, including artist stories, workshops, performances and the people taking part.

Learning with Gambian musician Ansumana Susso, who leads kora and balafon teaching for Under the Bantaba.
